Sri Lanka Cycling Tour: 9-Day Adventure Through Hidden Gems and Iconic Landmarks
Cycle Tour Sri Lanka recently wrapped up a thrilling 9-day cycling and biking adventure with Jennifer from the USA. This tailor-made bike tour was specifically designed to offer a more adventurous and personalized experience than the typical Sri Lankan bike tour. We incorporated more gravel and cross-country biking paths into the journey, steering clear of the traditional back roads and adding a layer of challenge for our cyclists.
Our cycling tour of Sri Lanka wasn’t just about physical endurance; it was about immersion in the culture, nature, and beauty of this stunning island. Throughout the tour, we visited some of the most famous tourist destinations, including the historic Sigiriya rock fortress, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, and the vibrant city of Kandy, known for its cultural heritage and temples. But we also ventured off the beaten path to explore lesser-known gems, making this a truly unique experience for Jennifer and other cyclists looking for something beyond the typical tourist trails.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this 9-day cycling journey was the bespoke nature of the tour. Our route was designed with a perfect balance between challenging cross-country paths and relaxing, scenic cycling trails. This combination allowed us to experience Sri Lanka’s diverse landscape—from lush rainforests to open plains and stunning coastal views. Whether it was cycling along the reservoirs of the Central Highlands or riding through tea plantations that stretched as far as the eye could see, every moment of the journey was awe-inspiring.
Exploring the Heart of Sri Lanka
The tour began with a trip to Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ride to this ancient rock fortress was filled with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, dotted with rural villages and expansive fields. Once at the base of Sigiriya, we took a break and explored the historical and architectural marvel of the site. For cycling enthusiasts, the ride to Sigiriya was a great start to the tour, with plenty of uphill challenges and rewarding vistas.
From Sigiriya, we continued our journey to Polonnaruwa, another UNESCO-listed city known for its ancient ruins, temples, and sculptures. Cycling through the ancient city allowed us to take in its rich history while enjoying the cool breeze and quiet surroundings. The roads around Polonnaruwa offered a smooth ride, with few vehicles, making it ideal for cyclists who enjoy a peaceful ride surrounded by history.
Next on our itinerary was the cultural hub of Sri Lanka: Kandy. Known for its Temple of the Tooth and beautiful lakes, Kandy provided a vibrant atmosphere perfect for a mid-tour rest. Cycling through the misty hills surrounding the city was an unforgettable experience. The cool climate and scenic roads through the mountains were perfect for those seeking a bit of relief from the heat of the lowlands.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures
While the well-known destinations were incredible, what truly made this 9-day cycling tour special were the non-touristic destinations we explored. Our route took us through rural villages, remote wildlife reserves, and hidden gems that few tourists ever see. One of the highlights of the tour was the chance to cycle along quiet trails near reservoirs and wildlife reserves, where we had the chance to stop and take in the beauty of Sri Lanka’s diverse ecosystems.
One of the most exciting parts of the tour was the safari at Udawalawa National Park. This was not just a cycling experience—it was a wildlife adventure. We cycled through the park’s perimeter, where we saw elephants, water buffalo, and a variety of bird species. It was a thrilling and unique experience that allowed us to see Sri Lanka’s wildlife from the saddle of a bike, a perspective few others get to experience.
